RSS FEED: How To Use RSS FEED to Market & Promote Your Products/ Services
April 16th, 2007The following is about RSS feed in general. Jennifer Cannon asked about this at BIIBOwners network on Ryze so I think I should share the same information with you all here too. RSS FEED:
RSS feed is a channel… just like a TV channel… You can have hundreds of blog posts or audio files (mp3)/ video files (mp4) in one RSS feed and these files must be uploaded in the page that is generating the RSS feed… in this way, people can subscribe to the feed (without giving you their email addresses). They will be updated with new text content or shows that you put in the feed/ blog page without having to go to your website/ blog site to see a list of your latest post or show. MARKETING & PROMOTING YOUR RSS FEED:
But you still need to market and promote your RSS feed. If you don’t, it will just sit in there and does nothing for you. People, who don’t know about you, can’t find your websites, so they know nothing about the contents that you put up in those websites. Look for blog directories and podcast directories on the internet to submit your RSS feed to.
My podcast directory, http://www.BusinessResourcesPodcastDirectory.com, do not allow submission of blog‘s RSS feeds that have no audio/ video content in them (because it is a podcast directory, not a blog directory) but I know other podcast directories owners of different niches, allow people to submit their text-only blog’s feeds. HOW I USE RSS FEED TO DRIVE TRAFFIC TO MY SITES:
I submitted my directory’s network feed (all network members’ podcasts are in one RSS feed) in more than 80 other podcast directories. So when anyone of us added a new show, the feed is updated automatically with the new show contents, be it text/ audio/ video. THE FEED AUTOMATICALLY updates all the websites that I submitted the RSS feed to earlier, with the newly added contents. That’s how people found my podcast, my network members’ podcasts and my directory’s site (because I put in a web link that will lead them to the directory site in the feed. That’s the beauty of an RSS feed!
So you need to make sure that your RSS feed icon is placed somewhere on ALL of your websites, visible enough for people to be able to see it to subscribe. Now, not all of my websites would look GREAT with that square orange icon. So I put up a feed player instead, see an example at; http://www.virtualreceptionists.biz/podcast.htmlBut that’s because the feed is an audio (podcast) blog’s feed, not a text blog’s feed
Visitors can subscribe and click on the subscribe link in the player, through the player itself. Isn’t it sweet??? I’m going to be uploading a blog for my VR websites soon and when that is done, you will see that there will be a text big enough that says something like “CLICK HERE to subscribe to this blog’s feed”.
HOW PEOPLE SUBSCRIBE WITH AN RSS FEED: Most people use iTunes to subscribe to audio/ video podcasts and how they subscribed to podcasts? They download the iTunes software on their desktop and then they enter the RSS feed address of the podcasts that they want to subscribe to in the program and then it pulls up all the shows in that one feed, so now the subscriber can see a list of shows available for them to listen or download on their computers or mp3 players. And every time a new show is added in the feed that they subscribed to, it will show up automatically in the same program. That’s why it is so important to show people your RSS feed address.
Its like having several episodes of sitcom Friends in one TBS channel… when a new episode is added in the channel, the program guide will alert you on your TV screen when it’s up there. For those who subscribed to text blog RSS feeds, they use the popular Yahoo! RSS Readers and the like…The simplest RSS feed reader I would use to subscribe to blogs is the RSS Reader. Just go to http://www.RSSReader.com/download.htm to get a free downloadable version of the software.
When new contents are added in the feeds that I subscribed to, I will get an annoying alert on my desktop ahahahhahahahahah but it helps. In this way, I know the latest post/ show in the websites that I have interest in knowing.
HOW TO GENERATE RSS FEED FOR AUDIO/ VIDEO PODCAST?
The easiest way is to use a blog that allows you to post text and audio/ video files, for example wordpress. Why? Bec a blog is RSS enabled, it is automatically generating an RSS feed for you.
When you set up a blog, a unique RSS feed address is assigned for your blog, only your blog.
So you need to install wordpress on your server through an FTP client such as SmartFTP, http://www.smartftp.com, (this is where you store all your website’s files) and then install podpress as a plugin for your wordpress. Without podpress, your blog would not have a player to play your media files. Google “podpress” to find websites that will allow you to download podpress for FREE.
Remember, your blog is now your very own audio/ video podcast page too. This page is in your website now… because you installed it on your own server. So you want to create a link in the navigation menu bar on your website that says, Podcasts, it will take the visitors of your home page to your audio/ video podcast page which is the blog.
Now you upload your audio file (mp3) or video (mp4) file on the blog through the blog administrator’s access login area, one by one…
You can also enter the title of the show episode, its description and include related links in the text area of the blog to drive people to the websites you want to include in the posts.Don’t forget to use keywords when describing the contents, that you know will get search engines spiders to crawl to your website for related contents.
When you view the page again, you now see a media player on it and test click the player to see if it’s playing the uploaded media file. At the bottom of the blog/ podcast wordpress page, you will see the word RSS, right click that text link you will see the RSS feed address. It’s something like; http://www.businessresourcespodcastdirectory.com/wordpress/?feed=rss2
So, now you have an RSS feed for your audio/ video podcast.
NEED HELP?
If you or anyone here is not very technical and need help in generating RSS feeds for audio/ video contents to be placed on websites, go to http://www.RimaMcDonald.com to see a list of things that I can do to make podcasting as easy as possible for you. I will give you the HTML code to upload the feed player for all of the recording of your tele-seminars, just like the one you saw on my VR website above.
At the International Podcasting Expo, renowned expert speakers talk about RSS feed in their presentations too. And I will be talking about how to promote and distribute your text blog/ audio or video podcasts’ feeds in directories.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Don’t just let your RSS feed sit there in your blog and expect people to subscribe to it. Include the RSS feed subscribe button in your email signatures, in your networking profile page such as Ryze, LinkedIn, MySpace, etc… You can get the button if you convert the original RSS feed to a feedburner feed. Go to http://www.feedburner.com to do that. There’s a link that will guide you how to generate the HTML code for the RSS FEED’s subscribe button. This is to get more and more people to subscribe to it without providing you their email addresses.
WHY?
So when it’s time for the promotions of your products/ services, add the information in the blog so that subscribers of your RSS FEED are aware of it too, not just your email list subscribers. That’s what I call “effective broadcast online marketing”.
